Understanding Copyrights and Publishing Agreements
Copyright is the foundation of the book publishing industry but is often confusing to new writers. In this workshop, literary agent and entertainment lawyer Léonicka Valcius gives a practical overview of the copyright concepts that most frequently appear in publishing agreements.

Léonicka Valcius is a Literary Agent at Transatlantic Agency who specializes in commercial and genre fiction for children and adults. As one of the founding organizers of The Festival of Literary Diversity in Brampton, amplifying marginalized creatives is a core part of her ethos. As a lawyer licensed in Ontario, Léonicka also offers detailed consulting and legal services to protect the creative labour and intellectual property rights of writers who do not have or want literary agents. Léonicka draws on over 15 years of sales and marketing experience and her work at multinational publishers to help her clients build sustainable and intentional careers.

How to Submit a Proposal

Click the button below to submit your idea or proposal. All we need is a short description, and your intended audience. Once you have submitted the form, please allow 7–10 business days for our committee to review. We will reach out with a status update, and if your proposal is accepted, you will receive next steps and an agreement form to sign electronically.
